Current affairs for TNPSC GROUP 4 exam part 1(Science&technology)

SCIENCE&TECHNOLOGY

1.Magalayan: Mars orbiter mission(MOM) or Magalayan(means Mars in Hindi) was launched by PSLV C25 on 5th November of 2013 and became first spacecraft to reach in its first attempt on 24th September of 2014 .Thus by this mission India became first Asian country to  reach Mars.Project cost of MOM is around 450 crores. MOM is being monitored by Indian deep space network ISDN in Byalalu.

2.IRNSS 1C: IRNSS 1C is  the third Satellite of the Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System(IRNSS) series launched by PSLV C26 on 5th October 2014 . IRNSS satellites will provide navigational facilities to India. Once this is implemented India will be self reliant in navigational services.

3.Defence: INS Kamorata is anti-submarine warship and it is commissioned into naval service on 23rd august 2014.It is a stealth warship. INS Sumitra is the recently commissioned ship for sea patrolling purpose. It is commissioned into service on 4th September 2014. INS Kolkata is guided missile destroyer Warship commissioned by Modi on 16th August 2014. Nirbhay is a cruise missile with the speed of 0.8 mach and has range over 1000km is developed by DRDO. It is stealth missile as it can fly at low altitude to avoid being detected in radar. It was test fired successfully on 17th October of 2014.

4.GAGAN: GPS aided Geo augmented navigation(GAGAN) is a system that can increase the accuracy of positioning and navigation. It is more accurate than that of conventional GPS.It can be used in air traffic control. It is being in operation since 2013.

5.I-KNIFE or Intelligent knife can detect cancerous cells  so that doctors can assure that only cancerous cells are removed during surgery. It is the fastest way to detect cancer.

6. Cryogenics is the study of production and behavior of material at very low temperature. Cryogenic engine (engine made up of materials at very low temperature) is used to launch satellites into Geo stationary orbit. Communication satellites are usually bulky with mass more than 2000 Kg and needs to be launched into Geo stationary orbit. So conventional rocket launchers such as PSLV cannot launch them  into Geo stationary orbit. Geostationary launch vehicle (GSLV)  uses cryogenic engine in its third stage. GSAT 14 was launched by GSLV D5 which is the first launch vehicle to use indigenously developed cryogenic engine on 5th January of 2014.GSLV MK III is next generation GSLV that can place heavier satellite with mass around 4000 kg into the Geo stationary orbit.

7.GSAT 16 is Indian communication satellite launched from French Guianna (not from India) by Ariane 5 on 6th december 2014

8.Indian Neutrino observatory is a upcoming research project being constructed in Bodi hills of theni district to study neutrino.
