LANDMARK JUDGMENTS: Supreme court(SC) recognizes transgender as third gender on 15th April of 2014.SC ordered Election Commission to provide NOTA(None Of The Above) button which can be used by citizen to show their disinterest to vote in elections.This landmark judgement was delivered on on 27th September of 2013. NOTA is also known as Negative vote. NOTA is used first time in Yercaud by elections in Tamil Nadu. SC in Lilly thomas vs Union of india case delivered a landmark jugement by declaring MLA ,MP and member of legislative council who are convicted of any offence with sentence more than 2 year will be debarred from holding their position from the day of conviction. Actually in this case it declared Section 8(4) of People representation act(PRA) as invalid.What this section tells? This section saves M.P,MLA and member of legislative council who are convicted of any offence from losing their position if they appeal in higher court within 60 days and SC commutes death sentence of 15 death row convicts to life term on the grounds of inordinate delay and mental illness on January 21 of 2014. In this landmark judgement, SC also gives guidelines in the interest of death row convicts.Guidelines includes providing legal aid to convicts, faster decision on their mercy petitions, mental health evaluation of convict, Minimum 14 days notice before execution and final meeting of relatives before execution. By this judgement, Rajiv Gandhi assassins’ death sentence was commuted on 18th February of 2014.
Judicial Reforms: National judicial appointments committee (NJAC) act regulates procedure for appointment, transfer and promotion of High court and SC judges. As it deals with one of the important branches of government of India, constitutional amendment is needed to enact NJAC act. So along with NJAC bill 121st constitutional amendment is ratified in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. is enacted to bring more transparency in judicial appointments. Chairperson of NJAC is Chief justice of india(CJI) and its members are two senior most members of SC, The union minister of law and Justice and two eminent persons who are nominated by a committee consisting of CJI,PM and Leader of Opposition (LOP). Rajastan became the first state to ratify NJAC bill.It needs to ratified in at least 50% of the states in order to become law.

RECENT SCHEMES: Sansad Aadharsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) is a model village scheme in which each M.P has to adopt a village per year from his constituency.It is launched on 11th October of 2014. Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana is launched for the welfare of tribal people. Government announces “housing for all” mission to build 11 crores houses by 2022. National food security act(NFSA) is one of the most ambitious schemes of UPA government is being continued by NPA government. NFSA was enacted last year. It aims to provide subsidized food grains to 80 crores people that includes 70% of rural population and 50% of urban population. NFSA project cost is around 1.2 trillion rupees. Price of rice,wheat and millet given under this scheme are Rs.3,Rs.2 and Rs.1 respectively. Deadline for the implementation of this project is 1st April of 2015.
Committees: Special investigation team (SIT) was setup by SC to investigate black money case. SIT is headed by M.B.Shah. Government of India has appointed a committee under Ramanujam to find and repeal outdated laws. Rangarajan committee is constituted by government of India to find methodology for detection of poverty line. It submits report this July and fixed Rs.972 as per capita poverty line for rural people and Rs.1407 as per capita poverty line for urban people in India. This committee also found that there are 29.5% people living below poverty line in India. Chattisgarh(49.5) has the highest poverty rate in India and it is followed by Odhissa(45%) and M.P(44%).Goa(6%) has the lowest poverty rate in India.
